Rostads friends
Rostad Gård in Inderøy stands as a living testament to history, once a large estate and home to Prime Minister Ole Richter. The architecture and interior date from the 1860s to 1900s, and several rooms are preserved in their original state with period furniture.
Guided tours at 13:00, Wednesday-Sunday in July.
Guided tours for groups available year-round by appointment.
OLE RICHTER – NORWEGIAN PRIME MINISTER IN SWEDEN
Ole Richter was born at Rostad in 1829. His later life made him a central figure in Norwegian politics, serving as Norway’s Prime Minister in Stockholm from 1884 to 1888 during the union with Sweden. However, his journey was marked by dramatic events, ending tragically with his death in 1888.
The main building at Rostad Gård still offers a glimpse into the atmosphere Ole Richter created on the estate in the 1870s through his political work, interactions with other politicians, and social gatherings.
EBBA ASTRUP
After Ole Richter’s death, Rostad was converted into an orphanage, run by Ebba Astrup, who continued to preserve the site’s history and significance. Since the 1960s, Rostad has been a youth home, and today the site is owned by Crux Stiftelsen Rostad. Rostad’s Friends, founded in the fall of 2006, aim to contribute to the development and dissemination of knowledge about Rostad, Ole Richter, and Ebba Astrup, as well as to interpret the relevance of history in contemporary and future contexts. The history of Rostad is not only local but also of national and Nordic importance, reminding us of the significance of understanding our past to shape our future.
MAUSOLEUM
At Rostad, there is a remarkable mausoleum erected by Ole Richter’s fiancée, Ebba Astrup, in 1907 to commemorate their great love. This monument symbolizes eternal love that transcends time and death. There is also a burial mound with an obelisk where Prime Minister Ole Richter and his English wife rest, along with the urn of Ebba Astrup. In 2007, during restoration work, findings of national historical value were made in the mausoleum’s ceiling, further enriching the history and significance of this place.
SUMMER EXHIBITION
In July, the summer exhibition “Love Is as Strong as Death” showcases themes of love, politics, and betrayal, care for traveling children, and the Mausoleum. You can join a guided tour through the exhibition at 13:00 every day Rostad Gård is open in July.
Opening hours in July: Wednesday-Sunday 12:00-15:30.
If you wish to visit outside these hours, just contact us to arrange a visit.
In the outdoor area, you’ll find a disc golf course, a football pitch, and a playground for children. From one of the parking lots, there is a marked cultural trail called “Rostadrunden.” It tells the story of the crofters’ cottages that were once part of the estate, giving you a better sense of the bustling activity associated with the estate. The trail is 3 km long and runs through the forest, along the sea, and across the fields.
