Nils Aas Art workshop

Nils Aas Kunstverksted is a museum dedicated to one of Norway’s most prominent sculptors, Nils Aas. The Kunstverksted (art workshop) is located in the center of Straumen, near his childhood home.

Here, you can experience several of his works through a three-dimensional installation, featuring sculptures, drawings, and reliefs that together tell the story of his life and work. At the heart of the gallery stands the iconic piece "Bauta," made of stacked wood.

Nils Aas (1933-2004) grew up in Straumen, where his father ran a furniture workshop. It was there that he carved his first wooden sculptures, laying the foundation for his career. He made his debut as a sculptor at the Autumn Exhibition in 1964 and achieved a major breakthrough in 1972 with the statue of King Haakon VII in 7th June Square in Oslo. Nils Aas's body of work is extensive, covering a wide range of techniques, materials, and artistic expressions.

GALLERY

In addition, Nils Aas Kunstverksted hosts rotating exhibitions of Norwegian and Scandinavian contemporary art. You can find information about current exhibitions on the Nils Aas Kunstverksted website.
