Mosvik Museum and Historical Society
Mosvik Museum is a volunteer-run village museum that is open during the summer season and by appointment. The museum is located near the national road and can also be a good starting point for hikes in village Mosvik, in the cultural landscape and on nice trails in the forests and hills around the village.
Mosvik Museum and Historical Society has the motto "We preserve the past because we are proud of our community". The association offers exhibitions at the museum, self-service cultural heritage trails and signposting of attractions, lecture evenings, photo archives, and local book publications.
Through a number of projects and events, they have created a meeting place where knowledge about local customs, crafts and stories is passed on to new generations.
AT THE MUSEUM
The main activity at the museum is thematic summer exhibitions.
• 2024 "Sports during a 100 years"
• 2025 "Nervika – changing from a tenants village to a sawmill and later a industrial area"
• 2026 "Hunting and fishing in our village"
The main building at the museum is the former Grande School from 1866. On the second floor here you will find a classroom from the 1950s where the film School Memories is continuously playing, showing interviews with people from our village.
The main building also contains a teacher's family's living room from 1950, a stuffed bear, and some smaller exhibitions.
Next to the school building is the forge, with a collection of tools by the village blacksmith Ole Gjerde.
The Nesstu tenant house is under restoration and development, and shows the typical building style with a house and barn in the same building. Here you will encounter an interior from the 1930s to the 1960s.
The Kaldalstua activity house is part of the museum grounds. The house has its own history as a forest ranger's residence, but today is a meeting room and base for the Krambua craft outlet.
NEAR THE MUSEUM
Close to the museum area is the Survikjekta theatre boat with annual new performances about Martin Kvennavika, Mosvik stadium and the small river Mossa.
It is a short walk to swimming at Mosvikstranda, to shops and some seasonal eateries.
CULTURAL HERITAGE WALKS
A 4.5 km long cultural heritage trail through the center of Mosvik tells stories about people, businesses and buildings that have shaped the center of our village.
The walk begins at Mosvik Museum, and goes along the Mossa River, the school and Mosvikstranda through the center to the Nervika industrial area and further up to Vinje Bruk and the church. It includes 34 posts, and opened in 2022.
The Selsetvika/Venneshamn cultural heritage trail is 2 km long, and runs through an area rich in cultural heritage from several time periods. It opened in 2024.
You will encounter rock carvings, burial mounds, trading houses, farms, liners, post and bank, the history of the poor, the district doctor, the skipper and the blacksmith. And several other themes on a total of 32 information boards. We recommend that you park at the marina at the north end, or at the rock carvings at the south end, and walk back and forth. Be careful where you walk along the road.
