Innherred is the name of the beautiful region situated innermost in the Trondheimfjord, comprising the municipalities of Levanger, Verdal, Inderøy, Steinkjer and Snåsa.
Historic region
Innherred offer many historic attractions and cultural and nature based experiences. Yet the region is probably best known for its many historic locations, especially Stiklestad where Olav Haraldsson, later kwown as “St. Olav”, was killed in the battle of Stiklestad in year 1030.
Every year in July, during the St Olav’s festival, the events leading up to the death of Olav is recreated in the play the St. Olav Drama. The play is performed in one of the largest opern air Amphi theatres in the Nordic countries, at the very site where the battle actually took place. The St. Olav’s festival at Stiklestad is also a folk festival fro kids and adults alike.
Around the region there are also several great medieval churches. The best preserved and the most visited are Alstadhaug Church and Mære church, in addition to Sakshaug old Church and Hustad Church, both located in Inderøy.
Other historic attractions are the rock carvings at Bardal, South of Steinkjer, and the rock carving Bølareinen in Bøla at the east side of Lake Snåsavatnet.. The rock carving of a reindeer is over 6000 years old and one of Norway oldest known rock carvings.
Cultural Diveristy
Innherred is also a region rich in culture. The St. Olav’s festival at Stiklestad in Verdal, The Marsimartnan (Winter market fair) in Levanger, The Steinkermartnan (market fair), The Vømmølfestival (Music festival in honour of the artist Hans Rotmo) at Verdal, the Viking festival at Egge Museum in Steinkjer and the Sodd-Jazz festival in Inderøy takes place every year . The region Innherred also offer diverse nature experiences. Norway’s Geographical Midpoint is in Ogndal in Steinkjer municipality. In the fringe areas of Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park you can hike the 10 km long trip to the midpoint. At Innherred you can enjoy the Trondheimfjord with a Ferry trip from Levanger to Ytterøy, or a Fishing trip, With Skarnsundet Fjord centre as a base.
